Bob Barner

“I have a keen interest in science, art, and music. I try to put all three of these to use in my books when I can.”

For years, Bob Barner's drawings and stories have filled children's heads with a sense of fun and a wealth of facts—how to use a map, the variety of marine life in coral reefs, and how our calendar works.

A native of Arkansas, Bob has been drawing since he was three years old. He grew up in Ohio; and after graduating from Columbus College of Art and Design, he worked as an art therapist for two years. Subsequent to moving to Boston, Bob was an art director at several advertising agencies and design studios. He drew L'il Abner and Daisy Mae for the famous comic strip creator Al Capp, and he studied with Milton Glaser at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Since publishing his first book, Bob has written and illustrated more than twenty-five books in his career. Bob has also created educational projects for the National Park Service, the New England Aquarium, and the Boston Museum of Science.

Bob Barner has won many awards for his books including the Parents’ Choice Award and the Teachers’ Choice Award. His artwork has received Andy Awards from the Advertising Club of New York City and has been exhibited several times in the Society of Illustrators' juried Original Art Exhibit. Some of Bob’s books have also been translated into Korean, Spanish, and French; set to music; and made into short films.

Bob has developed his own unique form of collage art. The papers he uses come from all over the world, and he sometimes makes his own paste paper with help from his wife Cathie. Using pastels, egg tempera, and other medium, he often draws on the paper before or after cutting or tearing it. He may also incorporate foils, beads, ribbon, antique buttons, fabric, cork, and other items.

When Bob is not writing, drawing, or playing one of his guitars, he enjoys speaking to young readers at schools and libraries around the world. He lives with his wife, Catherine, in San Francisco.
