SOCCER. BASKETBALL. LACROSSE. POETRY ISN'T ALL HEARTS AND FLOWERS!

Sylvia Vardell, Professor at Texas Woman's University, shares ways to read and enjoy The Fastest Game on Two Feet and Other Poems About How Sports Began (grades 1-5) by Alice Low, illustrated by John O'Brien, in this two-part poetry podcast. The book features 20 different poems about sports along with an introduction about the history of each. Says Sylvia, this "gem of a poetry collection counters the stereotype that poetry is all hearts and flowers." Use the book in a variety of ways across the curriculum, such as in physical education and history, and check out the anecdotes and time line in the back of the book.

Sylvia also talks about why and how to use poetry across the curriculum, in the classroom, and in the library.

Sylvia Vardell is the author of Poetry Aloud Here and the blog, Poetry for Children.
